Update: Holiday 2007. We have designed our own Mac/Eddy stamps to the delight of fans who are tired of waiting for "official" stamps to be released. You can order them here (note: this link takes you away from our website). But do read the article below as we are continuing our drive to have an "official" stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Stamp Committee to issue
a Mac/Eddy stamp. At this writing, they have issued stamps of popular singers, opera singers, classic films stars--but still no MacDonald and Eddy!
We have just set up an online petition for you to sign, click on the link here!
The background data: Our members (and other Mac/Eddy fans) have been writing the Committee for years
requesting a stamp. The Committee receives 40,000 requests a year for various
stamp subjects. A few years ago our club organized a drive to get 20,000
letters and petition signatures for our cause (the signatures included
the Governor of New Mexico and actress Rosie O'Donnell). We presented all
the signatures to the Committee in Washington, D.C. during a peaceful demonstration
which was covered by NBC News. We thought 20,000 names would do the trick.
It didn't. Some months later we were told that we had survived a "weeding
out" of hundreds of possible subjects, down to the last 15 that were being
considered. That seemed hopeful, but a year later we were given a vague
answer: "a MacDonald/Eddy stamp is still under consideration." Since then--nothing. We are starting a brand new stamp campaign, using an online petition. Unless the rules have changed, the Post Office advised us that you must include your full name, address, city, state
and zip in the petition for it to count.
Please have your friends and family or anyone sympathetic
to our cause sign it as well. A good follow-up would be to send them a "snail-mail" letter as well. You can read more about how the Stamp Committee operates by clicking here.
Look at it this way. Jeanette and Nelson were not only
great singers and movie stars, they were patriotic Americans as well. Nelson risked his life for the government during WWII and Jeanette received a medal from FDR
for raising $100,000 for the war effort by auctioning off her concert encores.
On top of that they helped and inspired young singers all their lives,
plus they put MGM musicals on the map. Let's face it, there would have
been no Judy Garland or Gene Kelly musicals without Jeanette and Nelson.
We are calling you--oo--oo--oo. Please help.
In the meantime, you can order our own Mac/Eddy stamps - eight different poses from each of their eight films together. The link is here. |
