Despite all, Nelson and Jeanette had a fierce, spiritual bond and loved each other to the end. The author was a close friend of Jeanette's older sister plus had access to a wealth of unpublished letters and memoirs. This is an updated version of the 1994 edition, including an additional chapter, new information and more photos.

Join us to celebrate the June birthdays of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy! The event includes a luncheon, book signing with Sharon Rich and K.T. Ernshaw (Nelson Eddy's longtime confidante, health permitting), possible other celebrity guests, a film clip program and memorabilia sale!

You can purchase as many tickets as you like online for our Los Angeles June Meeting!� Simply print a copy of your purchase receipt and bring it to the luncheon for check-in. You will receive an email confirmation of your purchase.

Note: purchasing a ticket for this event also entitles you to join us the day before (Saturday, June 26) for a driving tour of the homes of Nelson and Jeanette thorughout the Los Angeles area. We will drive from Beverly Hills west to Nelson's beach house that he bought for his mother after his marriage to Ann Franklin. We will also see "Mists," his hideaway home with Jeanette. When you purchase your ticket(s) please note whether you want to join us on the driving tour and whether you will have a car.

The first of Jeanette's "lost" Fox films, a nitrate print was discovered in the 1970s and all but one reel was saved and transferred onto safety film. (The missing reel had turned to dust in its can.) Luckily, the missing reel mostly consisted of a subplot that is barely missed. Jeanette is wonderful in a role that reminds one of her "Rose Marie" opera diva. She sings "Liebestod" and Bela Lugosi plays her manager. A real treasure! Video quality: good picture, good sound; the only nitrate damage occurs in the middle of the film, where Reginald Denny is giving a dreadful voice audition. The picture flickers and the sound disappears during that scene; otherwise the film is in good condition. A treasure; one of Jeanette's best early roles!

JN140: Jeanette & Nelson in TWO "Sweethearts" Broadcasts!

Two different Screen Guild radio versions of "Sweethearts," starring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. They are not identical although very similiar. Most of the songs from the film are included. However, in the first show they sing "Little Grey Home in the West" while in the second they substitute "Cricket on the Hearth," of which we hear only a snippet in the film.

The first "Sweethearts" was broadcast on March 25, 1946 and both stars were relaxed and sang well. According to an eyewitness account, Nelson was playful and pulled off one of Jeanette's shoes, tossing it onto the stage. After the show, according to the eyewitness in the audience, he wanted to kiss her but she kept "pushing on his 'manly chest' for all she was worth. He kept trying to drag her out in front of the curtains, but she kept wrestling with him until he finally had to let her go."

The second broadcast was December 15, 1947. Again, eyewitness accounts tell us that the two stars seemed stressed and Nelson was "very pale. Jeanette fluffed her lines right and left and Nelson just didn't seem to be particularly interested in the whole thing. They gave the impression that they hadn't been very well rehearsed." After singing "Cricket on the Hearth", the two stars sat down, Jeanette held her script in front of her face and whispered to Nelson about how they had "loused up that song - you could see by her eyes she was embarrassed. But Nelson, 'the perfectionist' -what did he do? He just sprawled confidently in his chair and with an airy wave of his hand to Jeanette whispered so all could read his lips, 'Nobody will ever notice it.'"

The sound quality on the first show is better than the second. Now you can listen to both shows and compare the similiarities and differences, and of course - there are the wonderful songs!

"According to the author, who spoke at a MacDonald-Eddy luncheon, the main character in this book is really the movie star Nelson Eddy. And it is obvious from the very beginning that this is so. Her main character has no name, just like the "I" in Du Maurier's "Rebecca." It's an interesting plot if you like futuristic novels, and this one isn't set too far in the future, but let's face it, Nelson Eddy fans will want to read it for the love story. You have to keep in mind that this author had an extensive intimate relationship with Nelson Eddy, off-and-on over a period of 20 years. She has preferred to play this down and writes under a literary name, but she did show up in person and was agreeable to answering questions about Nelson, except for the most personal. She said she wrote the book for two reasons, to give some biographical and true understanding of the Nelson she knew and to combine that with a novel idea that she wanted to tell. It's a long book but but thoughtful and well worth reading on many levels. On a related subject, when asked about Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, as in "did they or didn't they?" she answered that they in fact "did," that Nelson himself told her and she learned from him some of the details over the years. In fact, she only ever saw him when he had a falling out with Jeanette or was angry with his wife. This author knew the man at his most vulnerable and her book gives us a glimpse of what it was like to be close to this sensitive, artistic man. I highly recommend it!"

Whether one agrees with the authors assumption of what our earth's future may be like or not, it can make you stop and think. She is at least not afraid to tackle the one cause of our earthly woes which politicians and most writers shy away from."

The unnamed hero of her novel is recognisable to all those who have succumbed to the beauty of the voice of the early twentieth century baritone, Nelson Eddy. This is not a biography of Nelson by someone who never met him, but an affectionate picture of a man known and loved by the author, in real life. The second interest of the author is in the environmental damage we are doing to our planet, and her story takes place in the future, when many of our worst fears have taken place, and the world is in the process of recovery. The two interests are cleverly linked, and offer a ray of hope that mankind may be able to redeem himself, and put right many of his mistakes. But above all, this IS a love story to warm the readers's heart."

This was Jeanette's second Bowl recital. She was accompanied by Nelson's accompanist, Ted Paxson, and Nelson was actually backstage during the performance though he did not attend any of the post-recital festivities. Halfway through, you will hear Jeanette and the audience laugh; this was due to the wind that blew the sheet music off the music stands, and swept Jeanette's gown up around her face. This recital shows Jeanette at her vocal best and she breaks her own record for the length of time she holds the high note in "Italian Street Song!"

Before she became a movie star, Jeanette MacDonald was a Broadway ing�nue. In 1927 she fell in love with Irving Stone, who worked for his uncle's famous Milwaukee department store, The Boston Store. For two years, Jeanette and Irving kept their long-distance romance alive with frequent long, newsy letters. Irving carefully saved all her correspondence -- hundreds of pages of mostly handwritten letters that were found in his home after his death. Even after the affair ended Jeanette kept writing. She discussed her Hollywood career with him, including co-stars such as Nelson Eddy. Her last correspondence to Irving is dated 1938.

The Irving Stone letters are a revelation. Once and for all they disprove the fiction that Jeanette MacDonald was a prude. She frankly discusses topics like sex, industry gossip, her views on homosexuals, and marriage to someone she's not certain she loves. In 1927 she worries about pregnancy and setting up trysts behind her mother's back; the following year she carefully juggles simultaneous affairs with two men. She discusses various health problems including her earliest documented heart attack in 1929 at age 26.

These letters are transcribed uncensored in their entirety, with many of the originals reproduced. They give insight into the fiercely determined young singer who went on to become a 1930s Hollywood icon.

Sharon Rich has annotated the letters, adding rare photos, commentary and historical background.

The Old Gold Radio Show was a half-hour show broadcast on Wednesdays from April 1942 through January 1943. Nelson's co-star (though not in every episode) was soprano Nadine Conner. Nelson received $3500 salary/week for this show - he originally requested it be paid to him in cigarettes so he could donate it to the WWII soldiers! (By today's dollars, that's like $50,000 a week salary for a half-hour show!) Note: each show contains all of Nelson's songs and duets with Nadine Conner, but not any discussion between numbers. 3. Marriage Counseling: Jeanette and Gene Raymond. The Raymonds offer marital advice and Gene gives the reason for the success of their own marriage; they are ships that pass in the night.

4. Nelson on The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show, great comedy and some singing. The highlight is an unexpected telegram from Jeanette MacDonald that is handed to Nelson on-air, explaining that she is answering his "Indian Love Call."

5. Twin Gables Tour.� Jeanette and Gene Raymond's home was apparently shown on TV and the narrator describes the rooms and their contents for us.

JN176: Nelson ROSALIE party - Good news of 1938!

This "party" was a celebration/promotion for the Christmas 1937 release of Nelson's movie Rosalie. The main cast joined him, including Eleanor Powell, Ilona Massey, Frank Morgan and Ray Bolger. Jimmy Stewart is the host and even studio head Louie B. Mayer says a few words. By the way, he is introduced as "our daddy" - remember that Nelson hated Mayer insisting that HE was Nelson's father now and knew best about everything. Nelson had issues with his own father so didn't feel he needed another one...At any rate, both men are civil to each other during the show.

JN177: Jeanette BROADWAY SERENADE Tribute-Good News of 1939

On April 6, 1939, Jeanette was on concert tour in New Orleans and Broadway Serenade was to open in theaters nationwide the next day. But remember that Jeanette had left MGM (after Nelson's marriage and the completion of Broadway Serenade) and not yet re-signed her contract. So it was left to the studio had to promote the film on its radio show, "Good News of 1939."

With Jeanette absent, Robert Young was the show's host. Meredith Willson, Fanny Brice, Frank Morgan, Lionel Barrymore, Douglas McPhail and Kitty Carlisle were the guests and discuss and pay tribute to Jeanette. Much of the music is selected numbers (performed live) from the movie. In his tribute to Jeanette, Douglas McPhail credits Jeanette for "discovering" him and launching his career.

Regarding Cinderella, this was Jeanette's answer to Nelson's "Willie the Whale." In a 15-minute show she spoke and recorded all the voices. This show is perfect for children of all ages!

1. January 16, 1943: Jeanette hosts the entire show, a rarity for her in the 1940s! Others on the show include Dale Evans, Virginia O'Brien, Eddie South Orchestra and the Mills Brothers. Jeanette sings Gounod's "Ave Maria" and dedicates it to "several soldiers" including her husband who is "somewhere in England."

His grandmother (Nelson's aunt Mae) was a holistic medical doctor in the Philadelphia area while Nelson was living there as a struggling young singer.
